Time to Detox

Coming off a chaotic election, we’re quickly entering what is often the most hectic time of year.

What can we do to not feel more stress or crush our health??

It might just start with what we can remove or detox from our lives.

The definition of detoxification  is the physiological or medicinal removal of toxic substances from a living organism, including the human body, which is mainly carried out by the liver.

Now this is a great definition for when we ingest something our body doesn’t want or need - like too much sugar, heavy metals, contaminants in our water.

But our health isn’t confined to just what we eat or breathe in.

Every stimulus in the world around us has an effect on our health - down to the cellular level and even to our DNA.

So as we gear up for the end of the year - here’s a list of a few things you may want to detox:

1. Work

We all have responsibilities and for some of us work requirements are pretty extreme if we want to get ahead or even hold on to our current job.

But having unreasonable demands or deadlines - whether put on us by our boss/company or expectations we put on ourselves isn’t sustainable.

Studies show that optimizing productivity would be working a 5-hour day.

And being “always on” is a recipe for burnout.

So make sure to prioritize what’s important outside the office and create some boundaries - like not starting your day by opening your inbox before even getting out of bed.

Check out Dr. Carolyn Frost’s list of 21 boundaries to see what might work for you:

2. News

This election has been extremely divisive. Regardless of your political preferences - it was just plain exhausting.

While it might be over in one sense - the media isn’t going to stop to try and continue to capture our attention.

It needs our eyeballs to survive. So it will continue to sensationalize everything so that we feel we have to pay attention. But do we?

Use the stress of this election to be the final push needed to step away from the exhausting digital chatter that’s been dominating your brain.

Cal Newport

Instead - focus on what’s right in front of you.

  • Be involved in your local community (or even what’s happening in your own household).

  • Read a book instead of news websites.

  • Just get outside and experience your world instead of reading about other people’s worlds.

As Cal Newport recently wrote, “The Republic will still stand without our constant digital vigilance. But it’s unclear if our mental health can survive the status quo.

3. Chemicals

So yes - going back to the more traditional definition of “detox” - it does matter what we eat.

There’s going to be plenty of dessert in front of us over the next couple of months so maybe don’t wait until 2025 to make a bit of a resolution for what you’re going to eat and how you want to feel.

But it’s not just sugar.

A study just came out that 22 pesticides are linked to prostate cancer.

Four of those pesticides were even linked to death from the disease. Oh, and three of these four chemicals have been designated by the EPA as either “not likely to be carcinogenic” or having evidence of “non-carcinogenicity”. 🤦🏽

Similarly non-organic oat products - like Cheerios - have been found to have chlormequat on them. This chemical is banned for use in food crops, but apparently companies are doing it anyway because it’s a growth regulator that makes it easier to harvest the cereal crops.

So buy organic and keep all the chemicals out of your body!

Brain Games

Kyudoku

This one is a 3/5 on the difficulty scale, but was pretty hard for Max. Reminder: Kyudoku is a 6x6 grid where you need to use logic to find nine unique numbers (1 to 9) so that each row and column has a sum of 9 or less. The 3 highlighted in yellow is given.

Here’s a little help to get started. Because we know 3 is given, we can’t use 3 again (gray boxes) and we can also eliminate any numbers that would make the sum of the row or column with the given 1 more than 9 (blue boxes). This one may take a minute or two - good luck!
