Issue #24: Supplements - Weekly Summary 📓

Your Guide to Health & Longevity

I have laughed and cried, felt joy and pain, and most of all I've felt incredibly alive.

Roger Federer

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 16th. Way back in 1869, golf's first official hole-in-one was recorded in Scotland. Despite my subpar golf skills, I managed the feat one time back about 20 yrs ago - haven't come close since.

Today we're wrapping our Core Supplements - plus, we've got the results from all of our readers on their current vitamin/supplement habits and a great stretch for your legs in our Friday Flex Workout!

Weekly Insights

Thanks to everyone who participated in our poll on vitamins. Over half of you take multiple vitamins or supplements on a daily basis and about 1 in 5 don't take any vitamins or supplements.

Much more to come on this topic - as we'll investigate the effectiveness of more supplements not covered this week, as well as how to make sure you are getting the right nutrients you personally need.

This week we covered 4 Core Supplements.

We're trying something new for you - a single infographic with everything you need from each of our newsletters this week.

Save these images to your photos in a folder called Thrive25 and reference as needed - let us know what you think!

Vitamin D

The sunshine vitamin - more benefits than we can state here. Make sure you keep your levels in the optimal range for optimal health! (And get outside in the sun! ☀️).

Magnesium

The somewhat unknown master mineral. Magnesium balances our body's needs and can even improve our ability to learn! Eat those pumpkin seeds 🎃.

Omega-3

Our brain is made of this fatty acid - it's essential to our long-term health and our cognitive function. So make sure you eat your fish 🐟 (or algae).

Probiotics

Your gut influences your health and even your emotions. Those 39 trillion bacteria need a good environment and good fuel to thrive - so you can thrive!

PRO TIP: Remember when taking any supplements - always check with your doctor or medical professional first and only purchase high-quality, clean supplements. Here's the link of the 17 ingredients to avoid from Issue #20

Inspiration for the Weekend

Patagonia Gets a New Owner

Yvon Chouinard founded Patagonia 49 years ago. He was simply a rock climber living in his car. He taught himself to forge pitons (steel pegs in the rock wall).

For 9 years he struggled financially as he redesigned and improved every climbing tool to make them stronger, lighter, and more functional - taking the quote “perfection is attained when there is no longer anything to take away.”

Clothing became a way to support the hardware business - seeking that same perfection by testing the right materials for 10+ years that would fight the elements of temp and water for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. Patagonia became the innovator of the “layering system”.

Since 1984 they’ve had a cafeteria serving healthy, mostly organic food (1984!) and in 1986 committed 10 percent of profits to nonprofits supporting the health of the Ventura River. The focus on the environment continued - for example in 1996 the company committed to 100% organic cotton for all its sportswear.

In 2013, Yvon created a venture capital fund (Tin Shed Ventures) for startups focused on environmental and social issues.

Well in 2022 - he’s still ahead of the curve. Yvon and his family just gave away 100% of their stake in Patagonia ($3B value) to a specially formed trust & nonprofit that will ensure Patagonia continues its mission and that all profits go towards supporting the environment. Will this also become an inflection point to inspire others?

Yvon is 83 years old, drives a Subaru and lives modestly in Ventura, CA and Jackson, WY. Such an amazing story of someone who spent a lifetime “thriving.” Not by living an easy life - but by living his purpose, his devotion to others, and the health of the environment.

Bonus Inspiration

Farewell Roger!

Roger Federer has been one of my favorite athletes for nearly 20 years. After being a hothead junior sensation, he grew into one of the calmest, most respected athletes of our lifetime. He won't end up with the most grand slam titles - and he was never the biggest, fastest, best athlete either.

Yet somehow he played until he was nearly 40 years old in a sport where the latest U.S. Open champion is 19.

I don't often glamorize celebrities or professional athletes - they are human just like the rest of us. But I truly admired Roger's grace and humility to go along with his longevity and success.

Friday Flex

Did you do those squats on Wednesday (Issue #22)? Here’s a little stretch routine to get those legs feeling good going into the weekend!

Thanks for another great week. That's all we've got for you today - get ready for our new topic on Monday. In the meantime...

Have an absolutely awesome weekend!!
